Football-mad youngsters aged between five and 15 were recently given a free football masterclass by local club Alton United Youth FC. The youngsters have autism and are members the Alton branch of The National Autistic Society (NAS).
The Branch approached their local football club to put on this event and give the children a day to remember.
The football training took place on 1 October at the club's grounds. The children were split into two teams of five and taught new ball skills as well as receiving one-on-one coaching and support. The morning ended with a match between the teams so the children had a chance to put their new-found skills to use. Final score? A very evenly matched 2-2.
At the end of the match, Alton United Youth FC surprised the children with certificates of accomplishment, a medal and a football each which were presented by the coaches and committee members.
Joe Walters, who is eight, said, 'It was the best day of my life' and Alexander Lazell, nine, added, 'It was really good; I liked shooting at the goal.'
Gail Walters, Branch Manager of NAS Alton, said
We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Alton United Youth FC for hosting such an amazing event and for giving our children the opportunity to play football at a football ground. It was very humbling for these young men to give up their spare time to help teach children with autism and they were very helpful and understanding of the children's complex needs. Everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed it and have already been asking when the next session is!
